about

South African born/Toronto based Jim Gelcer (keyboards and vocals), and German born/Wisconsin based Hans Christian (cello and overall production) team up to offer a musical ode called Mariupol to the citizens of Ukraine.

This piece marks the first time that Gelcer and Christian have collaborated and their efforts reflect a natural musical chemistry of electronic, world, and classical elements.

It all started with Jim Gelcer reaching out to Hans Christian to suggest a musical collaboration. A follow-up phone call quickly cemented the idea with Jim sending basic tracks to Hans who would then refine the musical piece.

As the musical collaboration took form, new ideas emerged to dedicate the piece to the struggle for freedom of the Ukrainian people, with a focus on the besieged city of Mariupol. An excerpt of the historic speech by Ukrainian president Zelensky to the US Congress became the centerpiece of Mariupol.

Both artists have pledged that all proceeds from airplay, streaming, downloads, and donations will go to the Ukrainian Red Cross.

lyrics

“…Today it’s not enough to be the leader of the nation. Today it takes to be the leader of the world, being the leader of the world means to be the leader of Peace. Peace in your country doesn’t depend anymore only on you and your people. It depends on those next to you and those who are strong. Strong doesn’t mean big. Strong is brave and ready to fight for the life of his citizens and citizens of the world…”
- Volodymyr Zelensky, March 16th, 2022, US Congress
